Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei
“We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.”
The shirt is a wonderful diagram of everything Galileo. It is also a learning tool to easily remember more about him. Quite brilliant.
Heliocentrism, the fact that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun, was a monumental shift in our understanding of reality. Galileo was scorned by the scientific establishment for his understanding of this.
With his own, revamped model of the telescope, Galileo observed moons around Jupiter for the first time, as well as documented the most detailed images of the surface of our moon. He was also able to note the phases of Venus (seen at the bottom of this design.)
He wrote a book called The Starry Messenger about his findings and forged the basis for what would become The Scientific Method for testing theories.
One theory he tested, was the effects of gravity on falling bodies. He dropped weights from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and found that gravity pulls on heavy and light weighted objects at the same velocity, contrary to common belief.
He invented the first pendulum clock, though it was not constructed until after his death.
He also invented the sector and the hydrostatic balance which are featured in this design.
